$1.4 Billion Reached!

Celebrating. . . and Accelerating

Boldly Brown: Campaign for Academic Enrichment has reached its $1.4 billion goal nineteen months ahead of schedule. We are now poised to sustain our fundraising momentum - through June 30 to meet this year’s annual giving goals and through December 2010 to meet expanded endowment and facility goals.

"Let us pause to celebrate this truly historic moment," President Ruth Simmons told the members of the Brown Corporation on May 22, 2009, "but let us not rest too long upon our laurels. We still have a lot of work to do!"

To stimulate gifts to the Brown Annual Fund to help meet its goal of raising $36 million from 34,000 donors by June 30, 2009, the Annual Fund announced the "Twice as Nice" challenge. Anyone who donated to the Annual Fund between July 1, 2008 and May 21, 2009, and now adds to his or her gift by June 30, will have the additional contribution matched dollar-for-dollar.

In the final nineteen months of the Campaign, Boldly Brown seeks to secure endowed and capital gifts for the following priorities:

  • Endow 10-15 more professorships.
  • Meet the goals of The Alumni of Color Initiative.
  • More than $100 million needed to complete the $400 million financial aid initiative.
  • Secure more than $65 million needed to complete our targeted program of facility projects, including a new home for The Warren Alpert Medical School, a new facility for Mind, Brain and Behavior sciences, a new fitness center, a new aquatics center, and the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center.

Paying homage to President Ruth Simmons' leadership, Chancellor Tom Tisch '76 said, "We’ve got a blueprint for Brown’s future that has created a truly engaged, emboldened community of alumni, parents, and friends. When we launched Boldly Brown back in October 2005, we were optimistic that we could reach $1.4 billion by December 2010, and here we are, nineteen months ahead of schedule! I’m confident that we will continue to accomplish extraordinary things."

Asked their opinion about the Campaign's success in the midst of a global economic recession, Campaign co-chairs Jerome Vascellaro '74, Matthew Mallow '64, and Liz Chace '59, simply said, "It takes our breath away."
