“That this building has been magnificently restored as the Stephen Robert Campus Center thrills me more than words can express.” - Stephen Rober '62, LHD'04 hon., P'91

In the midst of 60s tunes, a student-written-and-acted performance, a celebratory video, and plenty of gracious remarks, the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center was dedicated on October 1. The Center, created thanks to the generosity of Chancellor Emeritus Stephen Robert '62 and other leadership donors, was designed by Schwartz/Silver Architects to be a space where the entire community can gather.

"The renovations made it possible for the community to re-imagine how best to use the spaces," said Diane Mokoro '11, President, Undergraduate Council of Students. "It already seems to be bringing people together."

Robert himself, in an email about the new center, reflected:

"Of the many things I've been involved with at Brown, this Center has an especially high emotional decibel.  This building was where I checked in as a Freshman in 1958, got my mail, and read the BDH most mornings. The basement also contained the Brown Bookstore, believe it or not.

The Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center"After I joined the Corporation in 1984, it is where I met Brown colleagues to chat over coffee and muffins. As Chancellor I had my own office, but I soon realized most meetings were more fun in the Blue Room. There you were among students, faculty, Corporation members and others; a wonderful connectedness to the Brown community.

The Center is located in one of the University's oldest and most cherished buildings. Constructed in 1904 courtesy of John D. Rockefeller, it was expanded in the early 1930s with a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (Class of 1897), and named, at his request, to honor Brown's ninth President, William Herbert Perry Faunce.
