A Message from the President

Despite the fact that the economy is one of the harshest in recent memory, Brown has found many reasons to celebrate this year. Among other things, we:

  • Welcomed 44 talented new faculty to campus.
  • Watched 60 Minutes to see Brown Professors John Donoghue and Leigh Hochberg discuss BrainGate - a mind-to-movement system developed in Donoghue’s lab.
  • Opened the newly-renovated J. Walter Wilson Hall, rededicated Pembroke Hall, continued the restoration of Rhode Island Hall, began the renovation of the Stephen Robert '62 Campus Center at Faunce House, and broke ground for the Perry and Marty Granoff Center for Creative Arts.
  • Announced the naming of Rakim Brooks ’09 as a Rhodes Scholar.
  • Inaugurated, with Banco Santander, an annual series of Brown International Advanced Research Institutes, bringing together a rising generation of scholars from emerging markets and the global South.

And, on May 20 - nineteen months ahead of schedule - Boldly Brown: Campaign for Academic Enrichment soared to $1.4 billion in gifts and pledges. End-of-fiscal-year numbers proved equally impressive: a record $1.415 billion toward our Campaign goal. At a time when many of our peer institutions are finding it increasingly difficult to engage their constituents, our alumni, friends, parents, faculty, staff, and students remain the most devoted, committed individuals imaginable. Whether on campus or in their own communities, they demonstrate their love of Brown through their dedication and their great goodwill.

In the face of such overwhelming generosity, we are honored and humbled. We pledge to strive toward continued academic excellence - accelerating our efforts to secure additional funds for financial aid, faculty support, annual giving, and key facilities - thereby ensuring the best possible educational experience for our gifted faculty and students. Together we will sustain the University at new levels of distinction, educating leaders, researchers, and humanitarians for generations to come.
