Campaign Priority: Expanding the Faculty
A passion for teaching and an academic culture that nurtures and celebrates great teachers are revered traditions at Brown. Faculty relish lively engagement with students who expect intellectual give and-take. "When you allow for a much wider range of faculty-student interaction, you have exponentially increased the kinds of educational possibilities available for students," says Katherine Bergeron, Dean of the College.
Expanding Brown's faculty and empowering professors to do what they do best are top priorities of the Campaign. The University is in the intensely competitive process of recruiting more than 100 new faculty members to establish the next generation of distinguished teachers, scholars, and scientists. In the 2008-2009 academic year we welcomed 41 new faculty members, bringing us significantly closer to the goal. Key to this faculty expansion is endowed professorships, which attract and retain faculty who are both exceptional teachers and productive researchers.
