Opening the Doors to the Future
President Simmons has made financial aid one of the University’s highest priorities. Every year since 2001, we have increased the resources available for financial aid and taken steps to ensure that our financial aid programs are competitive and effective.
These steps have included implementing need-blind admission, thus taking financial considerations out of the admission process; launching the Sidney E. Frank ’42 Scholars Program to eliminate the loan burden on the highest-need students; and increasing the financial aid available for transfer and international students.
Most recently, at its February 2008 meeting the Corporation announced a dramatic new policy aimed at reducing loan burdens for lower and middle income students and their families. Starting in the fall of 2008, Brown will:
- Waive the parental contribution for most families with incomes of less than $60,000.
- Eliminate the loan burden for students from families with incomes of less than $100,000.
- Reduce loan indebtedness at graduation for all students receiving financial aid.
This extraordinary expansion of financial aid underscores the University’s dedication to attracting and retaining the most highly qualified and diverse student body. But implementing these new policies has made financial aid the fastest growing element in the University’s budget. Next year’s financial aid budget is $68.5 million, more than double the financial aid budget of $33.4 million in 2001-02.
To sustain these enhanced levels of financial aid, Brown has increased its fundraising goal for financial aid from $300 million to $400 million. Our need for your contribution is now greater than ever.
