The summer after he left his home
in South Carolina to enroll at
Brown, Justin Ouimette ’07 (pictured
with Peter Romaniuk, in
foreground) became a member of
a team at the Watson Institute for
International Studies investigating
the financing of international terrorist
activity. “It’s an amazing
opportunity to work with brilliant
people on important policy
issues,” he says.
Without scholarship support,
Justin would not have experienced
Brown at all: “My family
made my education their top priority,”
he says, “but only tuition
support made Brown an option.”
Justin says he’s seeing the impact
of need-blind admission in the
classroom, where students of
varying backgrounds enrich the
quality of discussion.
Justin's research mentor is graduate student Peter Romaniuk, a native of Adelaide, Australia, who is working on a Ph.D. in political science. Peter is the recipient of a Joukowsky Family Fellowship. "Coming from abroad, I find the culture of philanthropy in American universities really startling. Having experienced the generosity of the Joukowsky family, I feel fortunate to be here." Of collaborating with Justin, Peter says: "It's very rewarding to interact with undergraduate research assistants; it forces you to articulate your arguments to someone not yet steeped in the scholarly tradition. Many undergraduates involved in research have gone on to do wonderful work."
